We are family - JP Väisänen speech in European Left congress in Madrid 13.-15.12.2013
IVth CONGRESS OF THE PARTY OF THE EUROPEAN LEFT
Speech - Communist Party of Finland
JP Väisänen, Chairman
Money, Money, Money - in the rich man´s world - that is the famous Abba song. A song from our dear neighbours - comrades from Sweden. Since the Abba’s Money-song from the 70-s, we in Finland and we in European Union have faced the facts about EU and facts about Euro.
With the EU we were promised new stability for our societies. Yes - Business, big capital and neoliberal political powers still believe in the EU concepts of freedom. But - Working class and the poor have another experience. Youth and elderly people are sick and tired of never ending cutting lists and other austerity measures, which make workers to pay the crises and create horrible numbers of unemployment.
For us the question of Euro is not only a question of currency. It is primarily of question of politics, neoliberal dogmas, structural imbalances and balance of powers. Withdrawal from the euro would not automatically lead to more progressive policies. Main problems are the role of financial markets and the power of big capital. What we need is common struggle for alternatives policies for more equitable distribution of income and wealth, for democratic control and social ownership of the banking sector.
European trade-unions, radical left parties - European Left as one of the leading stars – have organized European wide resistance. We, the once who do not accept the austerity measures of Angela Merkel, Troika or government – we have been calling mass movements, working people, youth, peace movement, communists, socialists, feminists, the LGTB, environmentalists and other people to stand up and build up an alternative against politic of the business-elites, against undemocratic and anti-human capitalist-system. It is our collective struggle - from North to South - from East to West. It is our radical family that has made statement of hope – a statement of change. It is our radical and class oriented collective. - Our family that has shown its presence.
I am so happy to be here because – Yes, we are family! - AND I got all the sisters with me! It is so true. Our political document shows it. One can find herself and himself in it. We can identify with it.
We know what families are all about: Love and care, disagreements and common understanding. Where there is trust and understanding, there is also possibility for as real and democratic change of views. Our 26 member parties and 7 observer parties are all in some ways different from each other. Don´t we know something about that in Finland.
But today the global capitalist crises, financial crises, environmental crises and crises of democracy call us urgently to find the unity in our political priorities. Demolishing the achievements of the labour movement is the united global project of the neoliberal, right wing forces. Today, more than ever, we should unite the forces of the left and progress, show power of the people and show that an alternative Europe is possible.
For us, communists in Finland this Congress of European left parties, the political document we will adopt and the electoral platform we are preparing, are useful tools in our campaign for the European parliament. We will bring a left alternative to the right wing populist forces and the austerity-pacts accepted by the coalition government of Finland. We will bring the voices of struggles and hope from Greece, Spain and other countries up to high north of Lapland.
Sisters and brothers,
Unity in common struggles makes us stronger. Let´s work hand in hand for the rights of workers, for democracy and sovereignty of people, for just and peaceful world.
Let´s strengthen our powers and sharpen our political tools for a new radical left cultural hegemony. Let´s dialogue and cooperate among progressive forces. Let´s involve citizens’ in the political life and open more possibilities for peoples own initiatives. Let’s find new friends and more cooperation with communist and other left parties in other countries, from Scandinavia to Russia, from Africa, Latin America and Asia.
As Marxist, one wish to end this speech by saying that our emancipatory collective, class oriented consciousness against the neoliberal orthodoxy of individualism, profit-seeking and consumerism – this struggle that reclaims the streets, goes to working places, market places, cultural events and other places where people move, where the force of change grows.
To be visible,
To be understandable and
To be where the need for struggles rise
A Collective - A Left Family!
